My Dad, me, and my sister

Hey guys! I have gone on an amazing journey on the Jamaican food train! I went Mi Hungry Catering and BBQ. It was my sister’s choice. I’d say, it was a pretty pleasant experience. A warning for all you out there, though, if your mouth feels like it is burning from spicy foods easily, do NOT order anything that has the word “jerk” in front of it!

Anyway, my mom drove up to the building, and I saw the name, and a little, pretend man standing next to it. I think he had confetti hair, which was really cute. I saw that they had not only inside seats, but bar seats and outside seats too. As I walked in, I expected to smell something spicy, but instead, I smelled delicious, and savory, smells. I was very excited, because, well, I have never had Jamaican food before. This may be surprising to you, and I was surprised by it, too. So, it was small, and sort of cluttered, but appealing in some ways. The fan was loud, but wasn’t much of a bother, since I could still hear the music, which was very rhythmic.

Before we ordered, a lady came to us and asked us if we wanted a sample platter. Of course, we accepted, just to see what we liked best. It had candied yams, collard greens, rice & beans, green beans, a reggae wing, and, of course, a jerk chicken wing. Here is what I thought: Candied Yams: were sweeter than expected, but satisfying. Collard Greens: were a little salty, but not inedible. Rice & Beans: the rice was not overcooked at all, and the beans were nice and soft, and very tasty. Green Beans: sort of sweet at first bite, but very satisfying overall. Reggae wing: a little tough, but pretty good. Jerk Chicken Wing: not TOO spicy, nice and tender.

After my family was finished with the platters, she gave us a little time to look at the menu. The menu was one piece of paper, which was good, because there wasn’t too much food to choose from. When she came back, we were going to order Jamaican lemonade, but they were out of that, so we just got water. When the time came to order meals, I ordered the jerk tilapia, fried plantains, and rice & beans. My sister was going to order catfish nuggets, mac & cheese, and corn on the cob, but they were out of mac & cheese and catfish nuggets, too. So, instead, she got a tilapia fillet, green beans, and corn on the cob. She will tell you how that tasted in her section. When I got my food, my jerk tilapia was a bit over-garnished, but it wasn’t totally covered in garnish. Now, my warning applies here. My jerk tilapia was pretty spicy, and people who cant handle spiciness very well shouldn’t order that. Not that it was horribly spicy, it was just as spicy as it should be, in my opinion. There were some bones in there, that I chewed up, though, and that wasn’t very pleasant.  The rice & beans were the same taste as on the sample platters, which was wonderful. The only thing was, there was tons of that stuff on the plate! The plantains were nice and soft, and tasted banana-ish, like they should be, but I only got a few of them. They were only a small fraction of how many rice & beans there were. Overall, I gave the restaurant three stars. Now, for my sister’s review!

 

The menu is one piece of paper of paper, which I like because it’s not to much. The jerk chicken is not to spicy. They were out of lemonade but they did have coke, diet coke, diet green tea, diet mountain dew, and water. They gave us lots of samples. There is going to be a band playing after father’s day. The plantains are good. My tilapia was severed with onions over the top, and was very easy to cut. My tilapia had two good sides: 1, Corn on the cob, and 2, Green beans. There were more sides, such as french fries, mac n” cheese,apple stew,cole slaw,corn, and many others.The sides are two dollars.The collard greens are salty.Also it was a small place a some seating plus counter seating.There is also outside seating.

Restaurant Tour De Jour!

Tour de Jour begins!

Hey guys! I am Young Chef. I have something exciting and very important to tell you. While we were sitting together on the couch, my mom had an idea. She said,”We don’t have to go faraway places just to taste new things.” Then she explained her plan. She said that my dad, my sister, she, and I would pick two restaurants we have never been to before. We would pick our favorite out of the two choices. Next, we will decide who gets the first week of June for their favorite. I think it should be my sister, since she is the youngest. Then, we will decide who gets the second week of June, and so on. After that, we would do the same thing with the 4 weeks of July, but with our other restaurant choice instead. My family calls this trip “Restaurant Tour De Jour.”

After we have finished dining at that restaurant, we will come back to my house and, together, write a section for this blog. I will try to post each one by Friday. I am very excited about this. I hope you are too, whomever is reading this. One of my sister’s choices is “Mi Hungry Catering and BBQ.” She doesn’t know about the other one. My mom wants to go to “Rooster,”and she doesn’t know about the other one. I want to go to “The Drunken Fish” and “Meskerem Ethiopian Restaurant.” As you can see, I do not have an ordinary taste pallet for a kid. My dad hasn’t picked any restaurants yet. I am looking forward to blogging soon!

Cupcake Lessons

UnknownHi. It’s Young Chef again. If you have a sweet tooth, this is the article for you! Okay, let’s get started. My mom knows the owner of this place called The Cup. The owner’s name is Ericka. All at once, I was invited to learn to ice and decorate cupcakes their way.

When I came, I had half of a red velvet cupcake that was so delicious. Then I started learning to ice a cupcake in a spiral way. Once I nailed it, she taught me to make a flower on a cupcake with icing. After that, I learned how to make a leaf out of icing on a cupcake.

When I was finished, we made cupcakes for all the workers in The Cup and made cupcakes for my mom, dad, my sister, and myself. They were delicious!

My Lemonade/Apple Cider Stand

Hi. Young Chef here. What an awesome story I have for you today! Okay, let’s get started. My mom and dad were having an Apple Fest at their store last fall. I got a stand that was built by Lee, the person I told you about last time. At first, I wanted to sell bottles of my homemade dressing that I told you about last time. My mom thought it was a good idea, but the bottles I could sell it out of were too expensive. Then I brought up lemonade. My mom said it was too cold that day for lemonade. Then she said,” What about apple cider?” It was a great idea. So I sold apple cider for a whole day. A dollar a glass was the price. At the end of the day, I made $66.50 including tips! I made the announcement of the money, then donated $33.50 to the Children’s Hospital. I felt so good that day.

Hi. Remember me, Young Chef? I’ve had another adventure. It’s not really an adventure, but it’s a great idea. My mom has a friend named Christy, and she knows her husband, Lee, too. She and her husband own the business Lee’s Services. They build and paint things. Christy also owns Sweet Pea Farms. I’ll be working there in the summer and in a couple months, they’ll be selling things like parsley and parcel. ( The only vegetable they’ll be selling are peas.)

So anyway, I get my best ideas about food in their house because they love to cook. I was inspired to make my own dressing for salad. It turned out to be a vinaigrette dressing and everyone loved it. It is made of oil, wine vinegar, (any color,) garlic, salt, and pepper. That’s my story for right now, but there’s more ahead of me.

My Shift at The Tenderloin Room

I’m Young Chef. I love to cook. I’ve been taking adventures of cooking for a while. I’d like to tell you about these adventures on this blog. First, I went to the Tenderloin Room in Chase Park Plaza in St. Louis, Missouri. The owner is Chef Dino. He’s really nice. I was in charge of the salads. Whenever an order of salad came in, I was making it. I met a chef named James. He is really nice too. He taught me all kinds of things, like seasoning meat right and putting the mashed potatoes and broccoli on the right place on the plate. Chef Dino taught me how to make the salads. I never got tired. The only time I went out of the kitchen was to eat my dinner at the end of the day, I had learned a lot. When it was time for me to leave, I saw the waiter make banana foster right in front of us! That’s it for now, but I have more ahead of me.
